What is the true cost of an employee in Spain?

The real cost of employing a worker in Spain is always higher than the agreed gross salary. The difference consists of employer Social Security contributions, which in Spain amount to approximately 29.90% of the contribution base (which typically equals the gross salary). This means that for every €30,000 of gross salary, the actual cost to the company is approximately €38,970 per year.

The main employer contribution categories are: common contingencies (23.60%), unemployment insurance (5.50% for permanent contracts, 6.70% for temporary), FOGASA — Wage Guarantee Fund (0.20%), and vocational training (0.60%). Additional contributions include the AT/EP rate (work accident and occupational disease, which varies by sector), and the MEI (Intergenerational Equity Mechanism). For 2026, the MEI contribution stands at 0.70% (0.58% employer, 0.12% employee).
