NIE Number (Número de Identificación de Extranjero)

The NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is the tax and legal identification number assigned to all foreign nationals in Spain. It is required for virtually every significant legal and financial transaction in Spain — buying property, incorporating a company, opening a bank account, signing a work contract, or filing taxes.

What Is a NIE?

The NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) — literally “Foreigner Identification Number” — is a unique identification number issued to all foreign nationals who have economic, professional, or social interests in Spain, whether resident or non-resident. It takes the format: letter + 7 digits + letter (e.g., X-1234567-A or Y-7654321-B or Z-XXXXXXX-C depending on issue date and origin).

The NIE is not just an administrative number: it is your tax identification number (TIN) in Spain. The AEAT uses it to track all tax obligations, the AEPD uses it for certain administrative proceedings, and notaries, banks, and the Registro Mercantil reference it in every document involving a foreign national.

Who Needs a NIE?

Any foreign national (EU or non-EU) who needs to do any of the following in Spain:

  • Buy, sell, or inherit real estate
  • Incorporate a company or be appointed as a director or shareholder
  • Open a bank account (many Spanish banks require it)
  • Sign an employment contract
  • Register as an autónomo (self-employed)
  • File a tax return in Spain (IRPF, IRNR, or Corporate Tax via a subsidiary)
  • Apply for a mortgage
  • Obtain a driver’s licence
  • Register a vehicle

In practice, the NIE is required almost immediately when any foreigner engages in economic activity in Spain, even before obtaining residency.

Types of NIE

There are two practical categories:

TypeFor whom
NIE for EU citizensEU/EEA nationals registering as residents (certificado de registro de ciudadano de la UE). The NIE is embedded in the certificate.
NIE for non-EU nationalsAssigned as part of the residency process, or separately for non-resident foreigners who need one for a specific transaction (e.g., buying property without living in Spain).

How to Apply for a NIE

In Spain

  1. Book an appointment at the nearest Oficina de Extranjería (Immigration Office) or participating National Police station (Comisaría).
  2. Complete Modelo EX-15 (for non-residents wanting a NIE for a specific purpose) or include the NIE request as part of your residency application.
  3. Bring: valid passport + copy, proof of the reason you need a NIE (property sale contract, incorporation documents, work contract, etc.), and the Tasa 012 (fee payment form, approximately EUR 10–12).
  4. The NIE is typically issued on the same day or within a few working days.

Abroad (at a Spanish Consulate)

Foreign nationals who need a NIE before arriving in Spain (e.g., to complete a property transaction remotely) can apply at the Spanish consulate in their country of residence. This requires the same documentation as the in-Spain process, plus a poder notarial authorising a representative to collect the document if needed.

Via a Representative with Power of Attorney

A representative with a properly drafted poder notarial can apply for and collect the NIE on your behalf — useful for non-residents who cannot travel to Spain for the application.

NIE vs NIF vs CIF

Terminology can be confusing:

  • NIE: Foreigner ID for individuals — starts with X, Y, or Z.
  • NIF: Tax Identification Number — for Spanish citizens, this is their DNI number; for foreigners, it is the same as their NIE.
  • CIF: Historic term for company tax identification number — now replaced by NIF for legal entities (format: letter + 7 digits + letter or number).

Frequently asked questions

What is a NIE number in Spain and what is it used for?
The NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is the tax and legal identification number assigned to all foreign nationals in Spain. It takes the format: letter + 7 digits + letter (e.g., X-1234567-A). It is required for virtually every significant legal and financial transaction in Spain, including buying or selling property, incorporating a company, opening a bank account, signing an employment contract, registering as an autónomo, filing tax returns, and obtaining a mortgage.
How do I apply for a NIE number in Spain?
To apply for a NIE within Spain, book an appointment at the nearest Oficina de Extranjería (Immigration Office) or participating National Police station (Comisaría). Bring a completed Modelo EX-15 form, your valid passport and a copy, proof of the reason you need the NIE (property contract, incorporation documents, or employment contract), and the Tasa 012 fee receipt (approximately EUR 10–12). The NIE is typically issued on the same day or within a few working days.
Can I get a NIE number from outside Spain?
Yes. Foreign nationals who need a NIE before arriving in Spain can apply at the Spanish consulate in their country of residence. This requires the same documentation as the in-Spain process. Alternatively, a Spanish resident with a properly drafted poder notarial (power of attorney) can apply for and collect the NIE on your behalf — a practical solution for completing Spanish property transactions or company formations remotely.
What is the difference between a NIE and a NIF in Spain?
The NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is the identification number for foreign individuals — it starts with the letters X, Y, or Z. The NIF (Número de Identificación Fiscal) is the tax identification number. For foreign individuals, the NIF is the same number as the NIE. For Spanish citizens, the NIF is their DNI number. For companies (legal entities), the NIF is the former CIF — a letter identifying the company type followed by seven digits.
Does a NIE number expire?
The NIE number itself is permanent and does not expire. However, the document certifying it (the physical certificate or card) does have an expiry date and may need to be renewed. Non-resident foreigners who obtained a NIE for a specific transaction (such as a property purchase) should note that while the number remains valid, they may need to renew the certification document for subsequent transactions requiring up-to-date documentation.
