Hórreos of northern Iberian Peninsula recognised as intangible cultural expression

Royal Decree 313/2026 designates northern Iberian hórreos as an intangible cultural expression under Article 11.2(c) of Law 10/2015. The recognition aims to protect their cultural and symbolic value through collaboration between the Ministry of Culture and autonomous communities. The process was initiated by the Ministry following a decision dated 4 September 2025 (BOE 15/09/2025).

In 2 key points

  1. The northern horreos of the Iberian Peninsula are declared as a Representative Manifestation of Intangible Cultural Heritage (art. 11.2, letra c), Ley 10/2015)
  2. The declaration process was initiated by the Ministry of Culture following a resolution dated 4 September 2025 (Resolución de 4 de septiembre de 2025 (BOE 15/09/2025))

How it affects those involved

For the autonomous communities in northern Spain, there is a consolidation of recognition of their intangible cultural heritage, supporting policies of protection and promotion. Cultural administrations will be able to develop conservation and dissemination programmes. Cultural advisors and local entities can leverage this recognition to strengthen educational and tourism activities. It does not directly affect businesses or individuals engaged in economic activities.
