Purse sein vessels in the Cantabrian and North-West Seas: anchovy catch limits set for the 2026 campaign

Order APA/377/2026 establishes catch volume limits for anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) in ICES area 8 for the 2026 campaign. The regulation governs the distribution of Spain's quota, prioritising associative entities and producer organisations for 90% of the quota, while the remaining 10% is available to other purse sein vessels (Art. 2). Catches made under this order shall not consolidate historical rights for future allocations (Art. 2.5).

In 3 key points

  1. 90% of the quota is allocated to associative entities and producer organisations based on catch, tonnage, and crew criteria, Art. 2.2 (art. 2.2)
  2. The remaining 10% of the quota may be used by purse sein vessels not included in the associative entities' scope, Art. 2.3 (art. 2.3)
  3. Enters into force the day following its publication, applicable exclusively to the 2026 campaign, second final provision (disp. final segunda)

How it affects those involved

For purse sein vessels grouped within associative or producer organisations, the regulation limits their catch capacity based on historical average, tonnage, and crew size criteria (Art. 2.2). Small-scale fishing vessels (xeito, racú, and piobardeira) are assigned a maximum limit to be determined in advance. If a surplus of catches exists by 31 August, the General Secretariat of Fisheries may redistribute said volume among the grouped purse sein vessels (Art. 2.4).
