Bottom trawlers in Portuguese waters: individual fishing quota allocations for 2026

The General Secretariat for Fisheries has established the fishing opportunities and individual quotas for the 2026 campaign for bottom trawlers operating in ICES subarea 9 under Portuguese jurisdiction. The resolution sets initial allocations for stocks such as scampi, plaice, blue whiting, monkfish, horse mackerel, and hake, based on data from the previous campaign. Final quotas may be subject to adjustments (surpluses or deductions) once the 2025 consumption data is finalised on the Gestcuotas website.

In 2 key points

  1. Total blue whiting catches for 2026 must not exceed 851,344 tonnes. (Antecedentes)
  2. Final quotas will be adjusted following the closure of 2025 data on the Gestcuotas website. (Antecedentes)

How it affects those involved

For shipowners and producer organisations operating in subarea 9, the regulation defines the maximum allowable catch volume for 2026, which dictates their commercial activity. Vessels that have been decommissioned or operate outside subarea 9 will have their quotas redistributed among the remaining fleet. Management may be conducted individually or jointly, depending on the notification submitted by the entities to the General Secretariat for Fisheries.
