The Directorate-General for Energy Policy and Mines has published the capacities assigned and available in basic underground natural gas storage for the period from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027. This resolution is part of the obligation for suppliers to maintain minimum security stocks which, following the amendment of Royal Decree-Law 6/2022, amount to 27.5 days of firm consumption (split into 10 days of strategic stocks, 10 days of system minimum operating stocks, and 7.5 days of user minimum operating stocks).
For natural gas suppliers, the resolution defines the available capacity framework to meet their security stock obligations (Art. 98 Law 34/1998). Obligated parties may substitute part of these stocks with LNG stored in national regasification plants, provided they report this amount when requesting capacity (Art. 5.1 and 5.2 Order TED/72/2023). Directly assigned capacity may only be used to meet this obligation, requiring the surrender of any surplus capacity under the mechanism set out in Circular 8/2019.
