How much does a tax advisor cost for SMEs in Spain? The variables that shape your budget

One of the first questions any business owner asks when looking for a tax advisor is: how much is this going to cost me? The honest answer is that it depends on several factors. Understanding the variables that have the greatest impact on the budget allows you to assess whether a proposal is reasonable, what is included, and what would generate additional charges. Ley 25/2009 and the CNMC guidelines prohibit professional bodies from setting indicative fee schedules, which has increased the dispersion of prices in the market. This guide explains how the budget is structured at BMC and what variables to consider.

How we work

From first contact to case completion

  1. Analysis of the current tax position

We review the corporate structure, the applicable tax regime, the volume of transactions, and the company's position with the tax authorities. We identify risks, opportunities, and the realistic scope of the work required.

  2. Transparent fee proposal

We present a detailed proposal with the exact scope, what is included and what is not, and the fixed or variable fees depending on the service. No small print.

  3. Onboarding and handover from the previous advisor

We manage the transfer of accounts, tax records, and the filing history with the tax authorities. Switching advisors is simpler than it seems.

  4. Ongoing monitoring and proactive communication

We alert you to regulatory changes that affect you, to filing deadlines, and to optimisation opportunities before the accounting year closes.

How are the fees for an SME tax advisor in Spain calculated?

Tax advisory fees for SMEs in Spain depend on several variables evaluated at a free initial consultation: turnover, number of employees, complexity of the applicable tax regime, presence of international transactions, and whether the service includes integrated bookkeeping. At BMC we always quote in writing after analysing the specific situation. See our fee arrangements for more on the general process.

Variables that determine the budget

The cost of tax advisory does not depend solely on the size of the company. The variables with the greatest impact on the budget are as follows.

Turnover and number of accounting entries. Higher transaction volumes mean more journal entries, more invoice lines, and more processing time. A company with 5,000 invoices per year requires considerably more work than one with 50.

Applicable tax regime. Companies subject to the general VAT regime, claiming R&D deductions, in the tax consolidation regime, or within the special regime of groups of entities have significantly greater compliance burdens than a standard SME.

International transactions. Exports, imports with customs declarations, intra-EU services, overseas investments, and dividends from foreign subsidiaries multiply the complexity of tax compliance and mandatory information returns.

Disputes and position with the tax authorities. A company with ongoing examination proceedings, recent inspection reports, or appeals in progress has advisory needs that go well beyond ordinary compliance.

Level of tax planning. There is a significant difference between a compliance-oriented service (filing returns) and a planning-oriented one (anticipating the year-end position, reviewing available deductions, structuring dividends, planning investments). The latter requires more work but typically generates a return.

Number of group companies. A second or third company with similar activity adds less work than the first due to economies of scale, but requires additional coordination if there is tax consolidation or shared cost accounting.

Fee transparency at BMC

At BMC we do not publish standard fee schedules because every company is different. What we always do is present a written fee proposal before starting the engagement, with the detailed scope, what is included, and what would generate additional charges. We do not apply supplements for ordinary queries included in the contract, and we notify the client before carrying out work that exceeds the agreed scope.

The first consultation is free and without commitment. We analyse your tax position, identify the main risks and opportunities, and send a proposal tailored to the reality of your company.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Fees are built around the agreed scope: turnover, number of employees, complexity of the tax regime, presence of international transactions, and whether the service includes integrated bookkeeping. After the first consultation we send a detailed proposal at a fixed monthly fee or per project. See our fee arrangements.
The main variables are: turnover and number of accounting entries, presence of international transactions (imports, exports, intra-group or multinational operations), number of group companies, applicable special regime (VAT grouping, fiscal consolidation, deferred VAT on imports), history of disputes with the tax authorities, and whether proactive tax planning or compliance only is required. The second approach requires considerably more work but typically generates a return.
It depends on the proposal. Many tax advisors charge separately for operational bookkeeping and strategic tax advisory. It is important to clarify before signing whether the fee includes: invoice processing and journal entries, bank reconciliations, monthly closes, periodic returns (VAT, withholdings), corporate income tax, and queries. Some include everything in a flat monthly fee; others charge per transaction. At BMC we set it out in the proposal.
The budget for a sole trader is generally simpler than for an SME (quarterly returns plus the annual income tax return). If the sole trader has complex activity (imports, multiple business activities, employees) the fees approach those of a small SME. In all cases we quote after analysing the specific situation.
Preparation of the corporate income tax return (Modelo 200) on a standalone basis, without an annual bookkeeping service included, is priced according to complexity: tax consolidations, significant temporary differences, prior-year tax losses carried forward, and R&D or internationalisation deductions all increase the work involved. For tax groups the fee is higher. Please request a specific quote after we have reviewed the company position.
Online tax advisory services start from lower prices. The real difference lies in the level of personalisation: standardised online services are adequate for straightforward tax situations, but not for companies with group structures, international operations, tax authority inspections, or tax planning requirements. At BMC we work with clients who need specialist advisory.
Items that frequently fall outside the standard retainer and generate additional charges include: representation before the tax authorities in examination or inspection proceedings, appeals and economic-administrative claims, one-off corporate transactions (capital increases, mergers, spin-offs), complex tax planning queries, transfer pricing (related-party transactions), and intra-EU VAT compliance across multiple countries. At BMC we set these out clearly in the proposal.
When there is a group or several companies under common control, the proposal reflects economies of scale: a second or third company with similar activity typically adds less cost than the first. Where the companies consolidate for tax purposes or share cost accounting, the increment may be smaller still. Please request a specific quote after we have reviewed the group structure.
