Trolling and longline vessels: 11.51-tonne quota for bluefin tuna bycatch in 2026

The General Secretariat of Fisheries has established the conditions for the 2026 bluefin tuna bycatch campaign by trolling vessels in the North-East Atlantic and Bay of Biscay, and surface longline vessels in the North Atlantic. The total quota allocated to these fleets amounts to 11.51 tonnes (Art. 1). The fishing season runs from the day following the publication of this resolution until 31 December (Art. 3).

In 3 key points

  1. Total quota allocated for the 2026 campaign of 11.51 tonnes, Art. 1 (art. 1)
  2. Temporary closure if 60% of the quota is reached before 1 July, Art. 5 (art. 5)
  3. The season ends at 23:59 on 31 December, Art. 3 (art. 3)

How it affects those involved

For owners of trolling and surface longline vessels, the regulation limits incidental catch to a maximum of 11.51 tonnes for the entire fleet (Art. 1). There is a risk of temporary fishery closure if 60% of the quota is consumed before 1 July (Art. 5). Any exceeding of the allocated quota will result in a deduction from fishing opportunities in the 2027 season (Art. 5).
