Cantabrian and North-West purse seine fleet: anchovy catch limits and certification requirements for specific vessels

The resolution establishes management measures for the anchovy fishery in ICES area 8 for 2026. Spain has a total quota of 30,485 tonnes, following the incorporation of 2025 interannual flexibility (Background section). Daily catch and landing limits are set based on vessel tonnage and semester, alongside a requirement to submit a certificate to access higher catch limits (Fourth section).

In 3 key points

  1. Spain's total quota for anchovy 8 in 2026: 30,485 tonnes, Background section (art. Antecedentes)
  2. First semester limits: 10,000 kg/day for vessels >120 GT or <120 GT with 12+ crew; 8,000 kg/day for the rest, Fourth section (art. Cuarto)
  3. Minimum size: 60 anchovy pieces per kilogram with a 10% tolerance in March, April, May, and June, Fifth section (art. Quinto)

How it affects those involved

For purse seine vessels under 120 GT with 12 or more crew members, complying with a 3-working-day deadline to submit a digital certificate is critical to access catch limits of 10,000 kg/day in the first semester (Fourth section). The remainder of the fleet is limited to 8,000 kg/day in the first semester and lower limits in the second semester (Fourth section). Additionally, a size control of 60 pieces/kg with a 10% tolerance is imposed during the first semester (Fifth section).
