Bottom trawlers in the Gulf of Cádiz: scampi catch limits for 2026

The General Secretariat for Fisheries has established individual scampi (Nephrops norvegicus) quotas for ICES area 9a and catch limits for functional unit 30 for the year 2026. Due to a reduction in population abundance, limits have been adjusted to ensure sustainability. Spain has a total of 46 tonnes for stock NEP/9/3411, of which 26.68 tonnes correspond to the Gulf of Cádiz.

In 3 key points

  1. Spain has 46 tonnes of scampi (stock NEP/9/3411), of which 26.68 tonnes correspond to the Gulf of Cádiz (antecedentes)
  2. The catch limit for functional unit 30 for Spain is set at 14 tonnes (antecedentes)
  3. Following the closure of functional unit 30, fishing may only take place outside the 12-mile limit of Portuguese waters (antecedentes)

How it affects those involved

For bottom trawling vessels in the Gulf of Cádiz, management will be conducted by functional unit to prevent the premature closure of the fishery. Once the 14-tonne quota assigned to Spain in functional unit 30 (NEP/*9U30) is exhausted, that unit will close, requiring vessels with remaining quota to fish only outside the 12-mile limit of Portuguese waters.
