Drifting vessels in Cantabrian and NW waters: individual southern hake quotas allocated for 2026

The General Secretariat for Fisheries has established individual quotas for southern hake (stock HKE/8C3411) for drifting vessels in the Cantabrian and NW fishing grounds for 2026. The distribution is based on the fishing opportunities of each vessel according to 2025 landings. It is stipulated that vessels with less than 2% of fishing opportunities will lose authorisation for directed fishing of this stock (art. 3.3.a Order APA/315/2020).

In 2 key points

  1. Vessels with less than 2% of fishing opportunities will lose authorisation for directed southern hake fishing (art. 3.3.a Order APA/315/2020). (art. 3.3.a de la Orden APA/315/2020)
  2. The total quota for the drifting modality in Cantabrian and NW waters is 2,039 tonnes (art. 2.6.a Order AAA/2534/2015). (art. 2.6.a de la Orden AAA/2534/2015)

How it affects those involved

For shipowners and producer organisations, the regulation sets the permitted catch volume for the 2026 campaign, based on the distribution of the 2,039 tonnes allocated to the drifting modality (art. 2.6.a Order AAA/2534/2015). Vessels that do not reach the minimum threshold of 2% of fishing opportunities are excluded from directed southern hake fishing in this fishing ground (art. 3.3.a Order APA/315/2020). Final quotas may be subject to adjustments based on surpluses or deductions from the 2025 campaign following its definitive closure.
