Canary Islands farmers: €8 million subsidy to reduce irrigation water costs

Royal Decree 733/2026 regulates a direct subsidy of €8,000,000 allocated to the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands to compensate for the additional costs of irrigation water (Art. 1). The objective is to lower the cost of water supplies from desalination, wells, galleries, or reclaimed water for the agricultural sector. The aid is channeled through the Autonomous Community to mitigate the high energy costs associated with obtaining and pumping water across the archipelago.

In 3 key points

  1. Total budget credit of €8,000,000 for the compensation of water costs in the Canary Islands (art. 1)
  2. Audit costs, financial transfer costs, and personnel costs dedicated to management are eligible for the subsidy (art. 3)
  3. Beneficiaries: public or private entities supplying irrigation water from wells, galleries, desalination, or reclaimed water (art. 4.1)

How it affects those involved

For entities supplying irrigation water in the Canary Islands (local authorities, public companies, water communities, etc.), a funding route is established to cover production and supply cost increases (Art. 4.1). Farmers will benefit indirectly from moderated water prices. Beneficiary entities may include audit costs, financial transfer costs, and personnel costs dedicated to management within the subsidy (Art. 3).
