Irún's 'Puente Avenida' declared a Place of Democratic Memory

The State Secretariat for Democratic Memory has declared the 'Puente Avenida' in Irún a Place of Democratic Memory, in accordance with Law 20/2022 (Agreement of 21 January 2026). The site is recognised for its historical role in the exodus of refugees towards France during the Civil War, serving as the setting for the first wave of approximately 15,000 people crossing the border (Agreement). The Administration will promote signage, educational dissemination, and digital resources to ensure its recognition.
