The 'Camocha Mine' (Gijón) declared a Place of Democratic Memory

The State Secretariat for Democratic Memory has declared the 'Camocha Mine' in Gijón as a Place of Democratic Memory in accordance with Law 20/2022 (Resolution of 12 June 2026). This measure recognises the historical significance of the 1957 strike and the work of the workers' commission as the foundation of the Comisiones Obreras. The declaration mandates the implementation of measures for the preservation, signage, and educational dissemination of the site.

In 3 key points

  1. The declaration does not alter the current use of the site, provided it is compatible with the preservation of memory and moral reparation (Fifth). (Quinto)
  2. The Administration shall promote audiovisual, digital, and interpretive signage resources for commemorative and educational purposes. (Quinto)
  3. An optional appeal for reversal may be filed within one month of publication (Articles 123 and 124 of Law 39/2015). (Quinto)

How it affects those involved

For the General State Administration, the resolution imposes an obligation to promote audiovisual, digital, and memorial signage resources for the interpretation of the site. Current use of the space remains unchanged, but any future use must be compatible with preserving the memory of human rights violations and recognising the victims. No direct financial burdens are established for individuals or private companies in this text.
