Fishing operators: 45 days to register auxiliary vessels and 7 days to apply for bluefin tuna bycatch permits

The General Secretariat for Fisheries establishes the implementation provisions for the 2026 bluefin tuna management plan in the eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean. The regulation sets the national quota at 7,938.81 tonnes (Art. 1) and regulates procedures for bycatch and the registration of auxiliary vessels. New obligations derived from ICCAT recommendations are incorporated to ensure stock management.

In 3 key points

  1. Spain's 2026 bluefin tuna quota set at 7,938.81 tonnes, Art. 1 (art. Primero)
  2. 45-day deadline to communicate details for auxiliary vessels (tugs, support, and auxiliary), Art. 3 (art. 3)
  3. Special permit application for bycatch required 7 days in advance, Art. 2.b (art. 2.b)

How it affects those involved

Operators of vessels making bluefin tuna bycatch are required to apply for a special permit via the MAPA electronic office at least 7 days in advance (Art. 2.b). Auxiliary vessel operators (cage tugs, support, and auxiliary vessels) must submit their details at least 45 days before commencing activity (Art. 3).
