Producers of 'Pescado de Esteros de Andalucía': transitional national protection for the PGI from 9 February 2026

The Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development of Andalusia has granted transitional national protection to the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) 'Pescado de Esteros de Andalucía' (First). This measure has retroactive effect from 9 February 2026, the date the application was submitted to the European Commission (Second). Protection will remain in place until the implementing act of the Union decision enters into force or the application is withdrawn (Second).

In 2 key points

  1. Transitional national protection with effect from 9 February 2026, Second. (Segundo)
  2. Protection will cease when the implementing act of the European Commission's decision enters into force or the application is withdrawn, Second. (Segundo)

How it affects those involved

For the 'Organización de Productores de Pescado de Esteros de Andalucía' and its members, the regulation guarantees the defence of the commercial name against third parties at a national level while the EU registration is being processed (Art. 8.3 Law 2/2011). Producers using this name under the protection of the transitional PGI gain legal certainty from February 2026 (Second). Other operators in the fishing and food sectors are restricted from using said designation to avoid infringements.
