Chickpea producers in Córdoba: transitional national protection for the 'Garbanzo Campiña de Córdoba' PDO

The Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development of Andalusia has granted transitional national protection to the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) 'Garbanzo Campiña de Córdoba' (First). This measure follows a favourable decision in the national opposition procedure and the submission of the registration application to the European Commission (art. 15.2 RD 1335/2011). The protection has retroactive effect from 9 February 2026, the date the application was submitted to the Commission (Second).

In 2 key points

  1. Transitional national protection granted to the 'Garbanzo Campiña de Córdoba' PDO (Primero)
  2. Effective from 9 February 2026 until the entry into force of the European Commission's implementing act (Segundo)

How it affects those involved

For producers and the Garbanzo Campiña de Córdoba Association, the measure ensures the defence of the commercial name and the exclusivity of the designation at a national level while the EU registration is being resolved (art. 8.3 Law 2/2011). Protection will cease when the European Commission's implementing act enters into force or the application is withdrawn (Second). Unauthorised competitors are restricted from using the name under this transitional regime.
