Merchant Navy qualification candidates: new limits for validating sea service on inland navigation vessels

This resolution amends the 2026 competency test call to unify admission criteria for practical training on inland navigation vessels (Art. 1). It establishes that bridge and deck students may validate up to six months of sea service on inland navigation vessels with gross tonnage ≥ 500 or length ≥ 24 metres (Art. 1.1.a). For engine and electrical students, the limit is three months on vessels with power ≥ 750 kW (Art. 1.1.b).

In 3 key points

  1. Bridge and deck: up to 6 months of sea service on inland navigation vessels with gross tonnage ≥ 500 or length ≥ 24m (art. Primero.1.a)
  2. Engine and electrical: up to 3 months of sea service on inland navigation vessels with power ≥ 750 kW (art. Primero.1.b)
  3. Effective from 15 April 2026 (art. Segundo)

How it affects those involved

Candidates for Second Mate, Engineer Officer, Radio Officer, or Electrical Officer must adjust their training periods to meet the new technical vessel thresholds (Art. 1.1). Sea service completed before 30 January 2026 remains valid provided it meets the regulatory conditions and the expiry terms of Royal Decree 269/2022 (Art. 1.3). Vessels operating entirely within the waters of a specific port are excluded from this validity (Art. 1.1).
