Businesses and individuals: 3 months to update official exchange rates or deviation risks

The Bank of Spain's resolution publishes the euro exchange rates from 7 April 2026 set by the ECB, now officially effective under Article 36 of Law 46/1998. These rates replace previous ones and must be used in financial transactions, contracts and tax declarations. The change affects all users of foreign currencies in Spain, particularly in international payments, interest rates and currency conversions.

In 2 key points

  1. Official exchange rates are updated on 7 April 2026 and must be used in financial operations (art. 36 Ley 46/1998)
  2. The Bank of Spain publishes the ECB's rates as official rates for use in Spain (Resolución de 7 de abril de 2026)

How it affects those involved

Businesses and individuals making international payments or contracts in foreign currencies must update their calculations using the new official exchange rates from 7 April. Tax authorities and banks must apply these rates in tax declarations and financial operations. Financial advisers should review their calculations and adjust their reports to avoid errors in asset or debt valuation. The risk of deviation in previous operations may increase if updates are not made in time.
