Businesses and individuals: 3 months to update official exchange rates or deviation risks

The Bank of Spain publishes the official euro exchange rates for 5 January 2026 as set by the ECB, effective under Law 46/1998 (art. 36). These rates replace previous ones and must be adopted by financial and commercial entities for official calculations.

In 2 key points

  1. 1 euro = 1.1664 US dollars (art. 36 Law 46/1998) (art. 36 Ley 46/1998)
  2. All foreign exchange rates published by the ECB come into official effect from 5 January 2026 (art. 36 Ley 46/1998)

How it affects those involved

Businesses and individuals carrying out international operations must update their foreign exchange calculations based on the new official publication. Financial institutions must adjust their internal systems to reflect the new rates. Finance and trade advisors must inform their clients of the update. The risk of calculation or pricing errors increases if the new rates are not adopted promptly.
