UNESCO approves rezoning of Allariz, Valles del Leza, and Macizo de Anaga Biosphere Reserves

The modifications to the biosphere reserves approved by UNESCO during its 37th session of the International Coordinating Council (ICC-MAB) in September 2025 have been published. The resolution establishes the rezoning of the Allariz Area Biosphere Reserve (Galicia) and the Valles del Leza, Jubera, Cidacos, and Alhama Biosphere Reserve (La Rioja), as well as adjustments to the zoning of the Macizo de Anaga Biosphere Reserve (Canary Islands), in accordance with Article 50 of Law 42/2007.

In 2 key points

  1. Rezoning of the Allariz Area Biosphere Reserve (Galicia) approved on 27 September 2025 (Annex I). (Anexo I)
  2. Zoning adjustments in the Macizo de Anaga (Canary Islands) covering a total area of 49,948.84 ha (Annex III). (Anexo III)

How it affects those involved

For municipalities and economic activities in the affected areas (Allariz, Valles del Leza, Macizo de Anaga), the new zoning dictates land management and land use. In the Allariz Reserve, the aim is to promote traditional uses such as agriculture and livestock under municipal plans (Annex I). In the Macizo de Anaga, the zoning covers both terrestrial and marine areas up to a depth of 1,000 metres (Annex III).
