San Simón and Santo Antón Islands declared Sites of Democratic Memory

The State Secretariat for Democratic Memory has declared the San Simón and Santo Antón Islands as Sites of Democratic Memory, in accordance with Law 20/2022 (Resolution of 6 August 2026). The enclave served as a penal colony between October 1936 and March 1943, where more than 5,600 Republican prisoners were held. This measure recognises the historical significance of the site, which was used as a prison concentration camp during the Civil War and the dictatorship.

How it affects those involved

The resolution carries symbolic weight and provides historical recognition for the memory of the victims of the Civil War and the dictatorship, particularly for the descendants of the more than 5,600 prisoners held at the penal colony. It does not impose any financial or administrative obligations on companies or individuals, but rather offers protection and recognition of the historical value of the enclave in the Vigo estuary.
