Refrigeration sector companies: new R-444A and R-456A refrigerants authorised for refrigeration installations

The Directorate-General for Industrial Strategy and Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises has authorised the inclusion of R-444A and R-456A refrigerants in the list of products permitted by the Safety Regulation for Refrigeration Installations (RD 552/2019). This expansion is carried out through the amendment of instruction IF-02, appendix 1, table A, following a request from the Association of Refrigeration Companies and their Technologies (AEFYT). The new refrigerants are classified in safety groups L2 and L1, respectively.

In 2 key points

  1. Inclusion of refrigerants R-444A (group L2) and R-456A (group L1) in instruction IF-02, appendix 1, table A (art. Primero)
  2. The resolution shall take effect on the day following its publication in the BOE (art. Segundo)

How it affects those involved

For companies involved in the installation and maintenance of cooling systems, the use of new refrigerant blends (R-444A and R-456A) is now permitted, offering technical alternatives based on their thermodynamic and safety properties (Art. 1). R-444A is classified as A2L and R-456A as A1/A1, which entails different safety requirements for installation design. The regulation comes into force immediately upon publication (Art. 2).
