Deep-sea and longline vessels: quota updates through 2025 flexibility incorporation and deduction application

This resolution modifies the census update and fishing opportunities for the deep-sea, large deep-sea, and longline fleets (both over and under 100 gross tonnage) operating in the North-East Atlantic. The measure incorporates interannual flexibilities generated in 2025 for all stocks, capped at 10% of that year's adapted quota (Art. 4.2 Regulation (EC) 847/1996). Additionally, it applies deductions for recorded catch excesses in 2025, while excesses that cannot be deducted remain subject to regularisation (Resolution of 4 February 2026).

In 3 key points

  1. Incorporation of 2025 interannual flexibilities up to a maximum of 10% of that year's adapted quota (Resolución de 4 de febrero de 2026)
  2. Application of deductions for 2025 catch excesses based on available quota (Resolución de 4 de febrero de 2026)
  3. The POL/8ABDE stock does not allow interannual flexibility, only by-catch (Antecedentes)

How it affects those involved

For owners of deep-sea and longline fleets, the measure results in a quota increase through the integration of 2025 interannual flexibility, limited to 10% of the adapted quota (Annex VI). However, vessels that exceeded their quotas in 2025 will face direct deductions from their current fishing opportunities. The POL/8ABDE stock is excluded from interannual flexibility, allowing only by-catch to support population recovery.
