Navigation in the Pontevedra Estuary: new rules for maritime traffic control and entry procedures

The Port Authority of Marín and the Pontevedra Estuary has approved a new Port Ordinance to regulate maritime traffic control within its service area (Art. 1). The regulation establishes mandatory procedures for notification at call-on points, entry authorisation into the estuary, navigation rules, and pilotage boarding (Art. 4). It is integrated within the competencies of Port Authorities pursuant to Royal Legislative Decree 2/2011 (Preamble).

In 2 key points

  1. Regulation of entry procedures, notification at call-on points, and navigation authorisation (Art. 4.1, 4.3). (art. 4.1)
  2. Establishment of a disciplinary regime for offences committed within the service area (Art. 5). (art. 5)

How it affects those involved

For vessel operators and maritime service companies, the ordinance imposes a strict regime of prior notifications and authorisations for manoeuvres, anchoring, and onboard works (Art. 4). Vessels operating with undeclared dangerous goods or presenting technical deficiencies are subject to specific detention and control procedures (Art. 4.16 and 4.17). Non-compliance with these navigation and traffic control rules will trigger the disciplinary regime provided for in the regulation (Art. 5).
