Mediterranean bottom trawlers: additional fishing days available in 2026 through voluntary measures

The General Secretariat for Fisheries has announced additional fishing days for the Mediterranean bottom trawling fleet for 2026 (First). These days are allocated to vessels that implement voluntary measures, such as using flying or semi-pelagic doors to reduce contact with the seabed (Order APA/423/2020). To access the 3% of days allocated to Spain, owners must submit a formal declaration committing to maintaining such equipment throughout 2026 (Order APA/423/2020).

In 3 key points

  1. Allocation of 3% of the days attributed to the Kingdom of Spain for vessels with voluntary measures, Order APA/423/2020 (Orden APA/423/2020)
  2. Deadline for implementing technical changes: 15 July 2026, Annex I (Anexo I)
  3. Non-compliance leads to the loss of allocated days and sanctions under Law 3/2001, Annex I (Anexo I)

How it affects those involved

Mediterranean bottom trawling owners can increase their fishing effort by adopting lower-impact technologies (First). To obtain this benefit, they must carry out technical changes to their fishing gear and submit a formal declaration to the Directorate-General for Sustainable Fisheries (Second). Failure to comply with the measure or possessing gear other than that declared will result in the loss of the allocated additional days and potential sanctions under Law 3/2001 (Annex I).
