Businesses and individuals: 1 month to update official exchange rates in euros

The Bank of Spain resolution publishes the euro exchange rates effective May 21, 2026, set by the European Central Bank, which now have official status (Art. 36 of Law 46/1998). This enables all economic actors to use the new rates in financial operations, contracts, or tax declarations. The rates are published officially and considered valid from the day of publication.

In 3 key points

  1. Official exchange rates are updated each time the ECB publishes new rates (Art. 36 Law 46/1998) (art. 36 Ley 46/1998)
  2. 1 euro = 1.1599 US dollars (official rate from 21/05/2026) (cambio 1 euro = 1,1599 dólares USA)
  3. Exchange rates are considered official from the date of their publication in the BOE (art. 36 Ley 46/1998)

How it affects those involved

Businesses, companies and individuals carrying out international transactions must update their exchange rate calculations from the date of publication. Tax authorities and banks may use these rates to adjust tax declarations and fees. Financial advisers should review their calculations and communicate the new rates to their clients. Using outdated exchange rates may result in discrepancies in tax filings or payments.
