Grants for ethnographic research are not exempt and are taxed as employment income

A provincial council has requested clarification on whether financial grants for ethnographic research can be considered tax-exempt scholarships. The Directorate General for Taxes (DGT) has ruled that, as they are not for formal studies nor meet the requirements of the Statute for Research Staff in Training, they must be taxed as employment income.

The DGT's ruling

Las ayudas para investigación etnográfica no califican como becas exentas por estudios reglados, ya que no se orientan a todos los niveles del sistema educativo. Tampoco están exentas como becas de investigación si no se ajustan al Real Decreto 63/2006 ni cumplen los requisitos para personal de la Administración. Por tanto, se consideran rendimientos del trabajo sujetos a retención.
