VAT on vehicles sent to the Canary Islands cannot be reclaimed if transport was not arranged by the supplier

An individual inquired whether they could reclaim VAT on a vehicle purchased on the mainland and sent to the Canary Islands following a change of residence. The DGT ruled that they are not entitled to either a refund or a deduction.

Cuestión planteada Si tiene derecho a la devolución de la cuota del Impuesto sobre el Valor Añadido como consecuencia del envío del vehículo a las Islas Canarias.

The DGT's ruling

La entrega del vehículo no está exenta de IVA porque el transporte no fue realizado por el proveedor vinculado a la entrega, sino por el propio adquirente con posterioridad. Además, el particular no puede deducir la cuota por no tener la condición de empresario o profesional. Respecto al IGIC en Canarias, la competencia para resolver es del Gobierno de Canarias.
