Post-transaction discounts must be documented via credit notes

A hairdressing salon inquired whether it could apply a discount on furniture by issuing an invoice for different materials instead of rectifying the original one. The DGT ruled that any discounts applied after the transaction must be documented through a credit note.

The question raised

Treatment for Value Added Tax purposes.

The DGT's ruling

Discounts granted prior to or simultaneously with the transaction do not form part of the taxable base. If the discount is granted subsequently, the taxable base must be reduced and the rectification of the tax amounts must be documented through the issuance of a credit note. This invoice must state the identifying data of the rectified invoice, except in cases of volume discounts.
