Deadline for 40% reduction on pre-2007 contributions ends 31 December 2024 if contingency occurs in 2022

A participant in an occupational pension scheme enquired about the expiry date for applying the 40% reduction on contributions made up to 2006 following a collective redundancy. The Directorate-General for Insurance and Pension Funds (DGT) ruled that, as retirement is taken early due to the redundancy, the contingency occurs in the year of unemployment.

The question raised

Question posed: Available period to apply the 40 percent reduction provided for in the transitional regime.

The DGT's ruling

If retirement benefits are collected early due to collective redundancy, the contingency occurs when the requirements for said collection are met. In this case, the contingency is understood to have occurred in 2022. Therefore, the deadline to apply the 40% reduction to the portion of contributions made prior to 2007 expires on December 31, 2024.
