Specialist cot mattresses subject to the standard 21% VAT rate

A taxpayer queried whether mattresses designed for special cribs to increase safety against sudden infant death syndrome could qualify for the reduced VAT rate. The Directorate General for Taxes (DGT) ruled that these products are not included in the list of goods eligible for the 10% reduced rate.

The DGT's ruling

El tipo reducido del 10 por ciento se aplica a productos que, por sus características objetivas, estén diseñados para aliviar o tratar deficiencias para uso personal de personas con deficiencias físicas, mentales, intelectuales o sensoriales. En el caso de sillas de ruedas, se incluyen los cojines antiescaras, pero no se aplica el tipo reducido a otros materiales como almohadas, asientos, colchonetas o colchones. Por tanto, los colchones para cuna especiales tributan al tipo general del 21 por ciento.
