Businesses and individuals: 1 month to update official exchange rates in financial records

The Bank of Spain publishes official exchange rates for the euro as of March 16, 2026, in accordance with Article 36 of Law 46/1998. These rates replace previous ones and must be incorporated into financial records and foreign exchange operations. The change impacts all users of foreign currencies in Spain, especially in international trade or foreign payment operations.

In 2 key points

  1. Official exchange rates are updated daily by the ECB (Article 36 of Law 46/1998) (art. 36 Ley 46/1998)
  2. The new exchange rates must be incorporated into financial records and commercial transactions (art. 36 Ley 46/1998)

How it affects those involved

Business operators and individuals conducting foreign exchange transactions must update their financial records with the new exchange rates to comply with regulatory requirements. Public administrations and financial institutions must review their internal systems to avoid errors in payments or declarations. Financial advisors must inform their clients about the new exchange rates and the deadlines for updates. Errors in implementation may lead to discrepancies in financial statements or tax calculations.
