Businesses and individuals: 3 months to update official exchange rates or deviation risks

The Bank of Spain's resolution publishes the euro exchange rates from 4 March 2026 set by the ECB, now officially effective under Article 36 of Law 46/1998. These rates replace previous ones and must be used in financial transactions, contracts and tax declarations. The change affects all users of foreign currencies in Spain, particularly in international payments, invoices and interest rates.

In 2 key points

  1. Official exchange rates are updated every three months by the ECB (art. 36 Ley 46/1998)
  2. 1 euro = 1.1649 US dollars (official rate as of 4 March 2026) (cambio 1 euro = 1,1649 dólares USA)

How it affects those involved

Business owners and individuals making international payments must update their exchange rate calculations using the new rates to avoid errors in invoices, payments or tax declarations. Financial institutions must incorporate the new rates into their conversion systems. Financial advisors and wealth managers should review their calculations and communicate the updates to their clients. The risk of miscalculation or deviation may result in fines or claims if outdated rates are used.
