Businesses and individuals: 1 month to update official exchange rates in euros

The Bank of Spain resolution publishes the euro exchange rates effective January 21, 2026, set by the European Central Bank, which now have official status (art. 36 of Law 46/1998). This change allows financial entities and individuals to use the new rates in commercial and currency conversion operations, replacing previous rates. The rates are published in official format and are valid from the day of publication.

In 3 key points

  1. 1 euro = 1.1739 US dollars (art. 2) (1 euro = 1,1739 dólares USA)
  2. Official rates published on 21 January 2026 (art. 36 Law 46/1998) (art. 36 de la Ley 46/1998)
  3. The rates come into official effect from the date of publication (art. 36 Law 46/1998) (art. 36 de la Ley 46/1998)

How it affects those involved

Businesses and companies engaged in international transactions must revise their pricing and cost calculations in light of the new exchange rates. Individuals who exchange currencies at banks or financial services providers may apply the official rates from the date of publication. Financial institutions must update their internal systems to reflect the new rates. Financial advisers should inform their clients about the change and its impact on their operations.
