Obligation to file Form 720 if foreign account balances exceed €50,000

A resident in Sweden moving to Spain asks whether they must report or pay tax on €50,000 in savings held in a Swedish account. The DGT indicates that the obligation to report via Form 720 depends on whether the established balance thresholds are exceeded.

Cuestión planteada 1.- Si decide conservar los ahorros en la cuenta del banco en Suecia, ¿debe informar o tributar en España por ese dinero?.

The DGT's ruling

Las personas físicas residentes en España deben presentar una declaración informativa anual sobre cuentas en el extranjero. No existe obligación de informar si los saldos a 31 de diciembre y el saldo medio del último trimestre no superan conjuntamente los 50.000 euros. Si se superan dichos límites, se debe informar sobre todas las cuentas. La tributación de dichos fondos se regirá por la normativa del Impuesto sobre la Renta de las Personas Físicas.
