Self-employed individuals may depreciate professional cameras and deduct repair costs

A self-employed professional has enquired about the depreciation of a €5,000 camera used for their business activity. The DGT has ruled that this is a deductible investment asset via depreciation and that repair expenses are also deductible.

The question raised

Depreciation of the camera in Personal Income Tax.

The DGT's ruling

The camera is an asset used for economic activity and its deductibility is carried out through the depreciation of the acquisition price. The calculation shall be made according to the Corporate Tax rules or through the Simplified Depreciation Table if simplified direct estimation is used. Repair expenses are deductible due to their correlation with the generation of income, regardless of whether the asset is under warranty or not. The asset must be recorded in the investment asset register with all required identification and depreciation data.
