No obligation to submit virtual currency foreign declaration if balances below €50,000

The DGT clarifies that no information declaration is required if the combined value of virtual currency balances as of 31 December does not exceed €50,000.

The DGT's ruling

There is no obligation to file the informative return for virtual currencies located abroad if the balances of each type of currency as of December 31, valued in euros, do not collectively exceed 50,000 euros. In the event that said limit is exceeded, all virtual currencies must be reported. The obligation to file returns in subsequent years shall only be mandatory if the combined balance has experienced an increase exceeding 20,000 euros compared to the last return filed.
