Any number of decimal places may be used in unit prices, provided the total is rounded to the nearest cent

A petrol station company has requested clarification regarding the rounding of VAT bases and quotas, as well as the number of decimal places applicable to its prices. The DGT has responded that there is no tax regulation governing the number of decimal places for setting prices, and that the final rounding must be adjusted to the second decimal place.

The question raised

Rounding of the amounts of the bases and tax amounts of Value Added Tax

The DGT's ruling

There is no tax regulation regarding the number of decimal places unit prices must have, so businesses may use those they wish. It is possible to express prices with more than two decimal places to calculate the tax amounts, or to use two decimal places and then calculate. In any case, the total amounts to be paid or collected must be rounded up or down to the second decimal place (the nearest euro cent). Insignificant discrepancies in calculations resulting from rounding will not prevent compliance with the obligation to describe the transaction on the invoice.
