Average acquisition value applied to shares purchased at different prices at the same time

A taxpayer has enquired about how to calculate capital gains or losses resulting from the purchase and sale of shares in multiple tranches. The Directorate General for Taxes (DGT) indicates that if shares are acquired at different prices at the same time, an average acquisition value must be applied.

The question raised

Method for calculating capital gains or losses in Personal Income Tax.

The DGT's ruling

For shares acquired at different prices at the same time, it must be considered that the transaction takes place at a single moment. In a subsequent partial transfer, a proportional part of each group of shares is understood to be transferred, which is equivalent to applying an average acquisition value resulting from dividing the sum of the acquisition values of all groups by the total number of shares.
