This Royal Decree transfers the execution of State legislation regarding maritime rescue within inland and territorial waters to the Basque Country. The transfer will take effect on 1 October 2026, in accordance with Royal Decree 2339/1980 and the Statute of Autonomy of the Basque Country (Organic Law 3/1979).
Basque regional administrations gain competence to manage maritime rescue in their waters, improving local efficiency. Other coastal autonomous communities may review their organisation based on the distribution of functions. Maritime rescue services along the Basque coast will be managed by the community itself, reducing dependence on the State. Maritime safety advisors must update their reports regarding administrative competencies.
