Natural gas distributors: approval of the smart meter rollout plan and technical specifications

Order TED/1122/2026 approves the implementation plan for smart meters within the natural gas network and establishes the minimum technical specifications for this equipment. This measure complies with the mandate of Article 14 of Royal Decree-Law 18/2022 and aims to enable bidirectional communication, automated remote reading, and consumer access to daily consumption data. The objective is to improve supply efficiency, allow for remote disconnection, and detect anomalies or tampering via alarms.

How it affects those involved

For gas distributors, the regulation mandates the execution of a deployment plan for equipment featuring bidirectional communication and remote management capabilities. Consumers (residential and commercial) will gain access to their daily consumption data through digital platforms and benefit from more precise management without estimated readings. However, implementation requires upgrading infrastructure to support new security and energy efficiency functionalities.
