Judicial administrations to create 500 judicial units by 2026

Royal Decree 559/2026 establishes the creation of 500 judicial units as part of the 2026 programme, aligning with the new model of Courts of First Instance provided for in Organic Law 1/2025. This change aims for greater efficiency in resource management and flexibility in the allocation of judicial posts (Art. 1). The creation of these units is carried out by modifying the number and composition of judicial bodies, in accordance with Organic Laws 6/1985 and 38/1988 (Art. 2).

In 2 key points

  1. 500 judicial units to be created by 2026 (art. 1)
  2. The Courts of First Instance model allows for flexibility in the allocation of posts (art. 1)

How it affects those involved

Judicial public administrations must implement the creation of 500 judicial units in 2026, adjusting the judicial staffing structure according to actual needs (Art. 1). The Courts of First Instance model allows for more flexible allocation of posts, reducing the dependency between the creation of judicial bodies and specific posts. It does not directly affect individuals, companies, or employees, as it constitutes an internal reorganization of the judicial system.
