Ministry of Education to fund the implementation of Catalan as a national language in European Schools

The Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports (MEFD) and the European Schools have signed an agreement to regulate the teaching and funding of Catalan as an Other National Language (ONL) within the system. This agreement follows the decision by the Board of Governors of the European Schools to include Catalan and Spain's commitment to cover its costs. The regulation establishes the framework for linguistic and educational cooperation within the European Schools system.

In 3 key points

  1. The agreement allows for the incorporation of other national languages through addenda (clause nine.2). (cláusula novena.2)
  2. Termination of the agreement requires written notice with a minimum of six months' notice (clause ten.1). (cláusula décima.1)
  3. In force from 31 August 2026 (clause eight). (cláusula octava)

How it affects those involved

For the Ministry of Education, the agreement entails the obligation to fund Catalan language teaching in the European Schools. For students and families within the European Schools system, it guarantees the availability of Catalan as a language of instruction or study under the ONL regime. The European Schools will act as the recipients of the funding and the implementers of the linguistic rollout.
